Imane Khelif Wins Olympic Boxing Match After Opponent Quits in 46 Seconds
Quick Victory for Imane Khelif
Imane Khelif of Algeria won her first fight at the Paris Olympics in a dramatic fashion on Thursday. Her opponent, Angela Carini of Italy, quit just 46 seconds into the match after exchanging only a few punches. Carini did not shake Khelif’s hand and fell to the floor in tears after stopping the fight.
Controversy Surrounding Gender Eligibility
Khelif's participation in the women's boxing event has been under scrutiny following resurfaced reports about her gender eligibility. Both Khelif and Lin Yu-ting of Taiwan were alleged to have failed gender eligibility tests at the Women’s World Boxing Championships in New Delhi last year, with claims that they had male chromosomes. Despite these allegations, Khelif has always competed as a woman, including in the Tokyo Olympics, and there is no indication that she identifies as transgender or intersex.
Carini's Reasons for Quitting
Angela Carini explained that she ended the fight due to a severe pain in her nose, not because of the controversy surrounding Khelif. "I am not here to judge or pass judgment," Carini told reporters. "If an athlete is this way, and in that sense it’s not right or it is right, it’s not up to me to decide."
Moving Forward in the Competition
As Khelif advances in the Olympic boxing competition, the focus remains on her performance and ability to compete at the highest level. Despite the controversies and challenges, she continues to demonstrate her skill and determination in the ring.
