California Welcomes Mountain House, Its First New City in Over a Decade
California has a brand new city on the map! Mountain House, a community just outside the Bay Area, officially became the state's 483rd city earlier this week.
Residents overwhelmingly voted for cityhood in the state's March primary election, with a whopping 90% in favor. This exciting development marks the first time California has incorporated a new city since Jurupa Valley in 2011.
From Dream to Reality
Mountain House's journey to becoming a city is an interesting one. Back in 1994, San Joaquin County officials envisioned a community offering affordable housing options for Bay Area commuters. The plan came to life in 2003 with the first homes being sold. However, the 2008 recession threw a curveball. Nicknamed the "most underwater community in America" at the time, a staggering 90% of homeowners owed more on their mortgages than their homes were worth.
Thankfully, the community bounced back alongside the recovering economy. The population boomed, growing from roughly 7,500 residents in 2010 to nearly 27,300 by 2022.
Looking Ahead: Growth and Development
Mountain House is poised for even more exciting developments. A 22-mile rail link connecting the city to the Dublin/Pleasanton BART station is underway and scheduled for completion in the coming years. Additionally, plans are in motion to assess land north of the city for potential new neighborhoods.
The city officially celebrated its incorporation with a ceremony on Thursday. The first city council and mayor were also sworn in on Monday, marking a new chapter for Mountain House.
This small town with a big dream has come a long way. With a supportive community spirit and promising development plans, Mountain House is set to become a thriving city in California.
